A few new characters!

Day 4# Moon Princess
I've been working on Danielle Macks Paint challenge
this month. It's  taken me down a different path  combining
Acrylics, inktense pencils, gesso and charcoal. I love
nighttime and the moon..so this short, quirky,
little moon princess  is one I quite like!
Day #1 Deep Sea Mermaid
It's rare for me to sketch a character with pencil before
painting. As an intuitive artist I tend to look for characters
in the paint! Not this time though! I'm not a huge fan
of mermaids  so this was a stretch for me!
Cupcake  was never into them either. She despised
"The little mermaid" movie because of the scary witch!
I even love her in all the colour changes...a blue moon anyone?

I must admit I got a bit ahead of myself  sketching several
at a time. Then returning to paint them!
Each character with it's own personality,
there are definitely some I like better than others!
Day#2  the annoyed "Tree Fairy" done with inktense pencils
My little tree fairy seems very annoyed!! I am a huge
tree lover and there was a time my back yard tree was removed
without my knowledge. I grieved for several years and it took a
few tries before another tree finally took  in it's place!!

Maple tree in my back yard!
This little maple still doesn't provide the lovely shade
once enjoyed! However it does fill in the space and provide
some beauty!  It shall be raining for the next ten days and as you
can see the  greenery is very happy about that!

This rain is a blessing as there was a huge out of control bog
fire on Sunday! Fifteen minute drive away. Cupcake
took the photo below catching a picture of the smoke!
Burns bog fire July 3, 2016 ash rained down on cars  15 minutes away!

Burns Bog is habitat to  300 plant and animal species, and 175 bird
species. Beardo and his brothers frequented there with their bikes
as children! His little nephews were there only a few
weeks back! It was extremely  disconcerting for all, as
the fire jumped a highway threatening a large
business sector!...We're all extremely  relieved by this
summer rain!
Day #3 Butterfly princess
Butterflies  seem to symbolize fruition in my life!
They seem to show up during a perfect moment.
just before  a big life change!
Day #6 Ice Queen
I could easily be known as the Ice Queen in more of
a literal sense than the normal context of this cold Queen.
I love icy drinks! For well over two decades I had a
built in ice maker in my fridge. I whizzed up frozen drinks
all summer long for my daughter and her friends!
A few with alcohol for my friends too! Then for a decade
and a half I didn't. In fact I was lucky  when my fridge freezer
froze regular ice cubes!  Now for the
first summer in eighteen years we have a steady flow
of ice once again!! I am one happy ice Queen!!
Day #5  Tribal Warrior mixed media
I was once a bit of a warrior against injustice. I often
went to bat for those less fortunate. However
at my age I haven't much fight left!
I feel the circumstances of today are  nudging the
youth to take a powerful stance against injustice!
It scares me, yet I know we all stood up to
make big changes. Sadly there is so much more
to be done!

Day #7 Masked Fighter

I was never much of a masked fighter more of
a stand up and speak with passion! My whole
life I was for the underdog.  Some how I always
managed to float just above that. However things
can quickly change and we can all be in
the underdog position without much notice!!
I have been there too!

I always did the best with what I had!
Finding joy in any and every nook and cranny
possible! Now my daughter does the same
I really believe it's one of the
components to  happiness!!

Oh and wouldn't life be rich if we could
just wear rose coloured glasses and change
the moon to pink on a whim?
How about you do you have any of these
characters residing with in?

Check out this very quick  video  of an
awesome artist   collaboration
with her toddler.  Amazing!!

Resisting Change

Mixed media, painted then collaged with strips of my own paintings. City

Well apparently our creative muse has returned... Yahoo, and it's so much fun!! Even  Beardo stowaway in his music cave the dining room   to write a song, after months of feeling creatively stagnant.  Apparently the muse loves a dirty messy house... who knew! Unfortunately, the muse and I are NOT on the same page. The little clutter fests are getting to me!! So everything is a trade off! I shall tackle it a bit at a time!
Original Jenny the Jester  acrylic paint!!

We've planted the seeds of change in our minds! It's a slow
process and we keep sabotaging ourselves. Although we give
items to charity monthly there is so muchmore we need to release
to live simpler! The seeds are planted in the direction of change!!
This week Cupcake is quite sick yet she still trudges to
work poor thing.Beardo and her have tickets for the
Jeff Bridges concert tonight too!!

Like I said last week, the world is rapidly changing. How we convey and receive information is so quick.  The younger generations are putting value on  different things than we did. They're cherry picking what worked in the past and leaving the least affective behind! They are scanning through the babyboomers mistakes and trying to navigate a  new way! Clearing out the clutter of our world. Living simpler! They just aren't aspiring to what many of us aspired to!
My generation fell into the trap of being  socialized into the footsteps of our parents. In my case my mother was only one of two working moms in our neighbourhood. With an extremely domestic side mom did everything a stay at home mom did and more, yet rarely showed up to special events or school functions that we took part in.

My generation took it a step further,  volunteering  at schools, attending  all extracurricular activities and functions as well as keeping up the house and working full time! Many such as myself burnt out trying to do it allon very little sleep! Some young people still fall into this trap, but the majority have rethought things. Prioritizing, knowing it's too difficult to be all things to all people, chasing things you don't really want, to please people you don't really like. First question....what do you really want and what do you really love? That works for clearing clutter too!! I never asked myself that question seriously until  well  into my fourties!

I read all the comments on last weeks post  a few times and think  I need to elaborate a touch more about social media. I'm a big fat hypocrite because although I have had a twitter account from the beginning, I don't tweet!  However it's possible I  write and create art for different reasons than  other artists! Some artists want and need  to generate an income, others want to have art shows, some want online notoriety, others want to build a portfolio, some create art therapeutically. Others create art for personal gratification and expression or self exploration and improvement!  Why do you create art? other than your soul propels you to....

If you want to get your art out to the world, outside of doing the foot work  the best way is to build your brand. I know it sounds redundant, but it's the wave of the future! Young people are reserving instagrams and twitter accounts for their babies, knowing it's now the way of the world! Eventually instead of a job interview or a portfolio you may be asked for your instagram account! As it is now, some employers google search your name, check facebook, and anything else they can find on you!! Recently I heard of a case where they asked for a persons credit rating too!
For those  afraid we are sharing too much information do like mother said, keep your nose clean. Don't put anything out there you wouldn't want to defend in person! In other words be boring but don't bore people!! Show your best side. Share things others might enjoy or be interested in. It's also a good way of exploring who you are. I don't think Cupcake realized how much she loves taking food photos until she had an instagram account. When a newspaper posts her food photos which they have done several times because she uses their hash tag on those food photos,  they post her instagram account with it, drawing in more followers. It's exciting when they pick your photo out of thousands!
Instagram is a much like a pyramid scheme. When a person likes your photo, that photo could go onto the recommended search page of people that follow you! (To put it in simply,  it's as though instagram  is saying "your friend likes these pictures, we think  you may like them too," then they are placed on your suggested search page! Which you can quickly scan to find new artist you might love! Hashtags send your photos to different pages where you may pick up new followers too!
You  need to visit  and like several photos to lead people  back to your instagram account!! The object of the game is to get them to like and follow you! To build it, you need to post at least daily for a while! Too many posts in a short span of time on the same day can  anger people, and they may stop following you! If you post too often they miss out on their other posts that fall to the bottom!
I started instagram  over a year ago but then never posted...I just recently started posting regularly because I am realizing the importance of building my brand, for no reason in particular! Just because! Similar to blogging you may not fully understand why you are doing it, then one day it will be clear why you need your own brand!! This is not flicker, which is like a holding tank for photos!  It's not facebook.  It's a place to connect quickly to lots of like minded souls at once.To show the world who you are and what you love!
Make authentic comments on photos you love, build short communications with those folks you  really admire! I am  following mostly artists.  I am not a huge fan of skulls, I know they are fashionable but  I rarely follow people who post them. It's just not my thing... I find the art inspires me, motivates me, and shows me a little more of who I am! I don't follow people who post food....I don't follow Cupcake or Beardo. I love whimsical artists, some cartoonists, quirky artist, childrens illustrators as well as a few comical artists and comedians.
There are apps and programs where you can pay people to follow you! I don't know much about that yet though! Just focus on building your own brand. Seriously once you get the hang of it, you won't need to spend much time on it! However you can meet some really talented artists that share info you may want or need!
Twitter is another animal that gets info to you in 140 characters or less... It's interesting to watch it work.  Anyone and everyone can  communicate anything via twitter. You could have a chance for a publisher to see your work where in the past it could take years to make that happen.  Part of the secret is to get people interested in who and what you are and have to offer! There are more opportunities for those who are savvy on social media. Some people think social media is a time thief when in actuality it can free up time. The days of sitting down to watch the News are coming to an end. By the time you sit down to watch it, that information is outdated!  You can deny it, but this technology, much like computers and tablets is here to stay whether we like it or not! Everything and anything we are interested in is at our fingertips within minutes!

Of course much like those friends who are so out of the loop they continue to send you comical emails that were trending three years ago,  there will always be those to resist the changes!! Some people are old school and refuse to embrace change...and that's okay... trudge merrily along doing your thing!! That works for you and me too! Those of you who are wondering how you can get yourself out there to sell art and make good connections, and maybe be discovered, GET BUILDING!!  Ask yourself, Who am I?? You just never know what offers may appear!! Good luck to all of you whether you build a brand or just toodle along!! There are no guarantees...just hope and belief! Do you resist change?

Intuition and Crazy Dresses Paint Party Friday!

Blotch Dress made of residual paint blotted off another painting!
By nature I'm generally even tempered and flexible.  In my fifty eight years I  remember only feeling the heat of my temper flare a few times. At fifteen when  mother and her sister attacked me with unjustified criticism while drinking wine. I verbally defended myself, then left the house. The frenetic thirty minute walk to my boyfriends place in the dark literally  felt like seconds! The ire felt unfamiliar and replaced my usual bruised feelings.  It wasn't  the first time they bullied me and wouldn't be the last. In retrospect it's understandable that I finally snapped!
Crazy "Head Dress"
Then at  forty when my daughters dad accused her of lying to cover up his own deceit. I became Infuriated knowing  he'd  tampered with her intuition.  Something I had carefully honed for years. I was privy to the truth and my insides burst into flames as I finally took a stand for myself and my daughters integrity!
Crazy Dress " Eyes on you"
The intuition I nurtured in my daughter has kept her safe over the years. It enables her to read people well! To accurately  size up a new girl at eight who I  kept encouraging her to befriend who would later steal her pencil collection. To knowing the lady she smiled at the other day might be a bit off, long before she started screaming obscenities at her for no reason! As a teen her body would react to those instances that were unsafe. To this day her husband heeds her intuition immediately knowing she is rarely wrong. It's near impossible to keep a secret from her.   She guessed her pink boots one Birthday when we painstakingly attempted to dissuade her intuition by secretly facing a snow storm she knew I'd never attempt.   The only surprise that year,  was where they were hidden!

From the time she was little I asked lots of questions. Often surprised at her blunt truthful answers. Telling me which dads were mean when moms weren't around to which ones were kinder than they appeared! Her answers  were telling and somewhat of a precursor to dramas that  manifested later. She's always made good choices and I like to think her intuition is an impeccable  predictor!

If she  surmises somethings off when meeting someone new, it's not long before it's proven correct! Innately she knows and has always drawn good people to her side!  For generation the woman on my maternal side have had amazing intuition, yet Cupcake trumps us all! It's her guide and has been her whole life! Has she been hurt by people?  Absolutely devastated by a few.. her intuition warns her not to let it happen again!

As a shy child I never forced her out of her comfort zone by making her hug people just because they visited our home. From early childhood I constantly asked her how she felt about many issues. Often surprised by her mature and candid answers. I was open and honest with her and told her I'd never lie to her except on special occasions when I needed to keep presents secret! Eventually she came out of her shell. As an adult she's very friendly yet a great listener!

Over the years I've observed people  totally ignore their intuition when it came to partners and children. How about you, have you let your intuition guide you in the right direction? Or do you prefer to ignore it?

Paint Party Friday "A good trade off"

Thank you so much for all your
generous comments last week!
Eighteen years ago today, after a twenty three year marriage, in a pivotal  moment, a switch went off and my union was over!  It was an ugly ending, lasting almost two years, but I've never looked back, or had a desire to be married again!
Wip. First layer of a new canvas.
I gave up a fiscal security for the unknown. I won't lie, it was scary! It was  a struggle being a single mom but I was fortunate to have a child that never gave me a lick of trouble. Best of all I was a good example of peace in my child's life which she's  carried into her own loving marriage!
Color edits before the second layer! Wip
There was envy of my solo life. But everything is a trade off!! My dream home was sold, and I moved to a place of my own that I love, where I could put holes in the walls without a partners scrutiny. I could use color without judgement, and the remote control was mine, all mine!! Of course I shared with Cupcake!

Digital color edit wip
Things broke down, we did without, but there was always peace, something I really missed as a child! Instead of arguments, there was negotiation. I often felt the world on my shoulders, nothing a dinner with girlfriends couldn't resolve. Friends were incredibly supportive and generous in my most difficult days! To this day I feel so grateful for their love!
Wip
As time passed and Cupcake grew up, the joy of being single could not be matched. It's become a way of life I treasure! I discovered sides of myself I never knew existed!!  I fell in love with freedom and creativity!
Before.... jewelry box revamp!
 After ...Revamped Jewelry Box
Today Cupcake brought me home my first  toasted coconut frappe of the season from Starbucks!   A rare treat to celebrate eighteen revered years of freedom!
Have you ever done anything you were terrified
to do but eventually realized it was so worth it?

Paint Party Friday " Rise Up!"

 Paint Party Friday
Thank you Kirstin and Eva for featuring me this week.
It was a thrilling surprise!

I was always a vigilant parent warning with a whispered "Weirdo alert!" Educating my child in a non scary way of impending dangers in our midst! I watched for predators and encouraged my cupcake  to heed her intuition too!! It  gave her the ability to travel alone for business all over the country and overseas!

Being a large breasted child, and I say child, because I was fully developed at nine!! I was a target for male predators. A very old extended family member attempted to molest me at ten. Even though I told on him, his wife died not knowing!

,

A male teacher kept pestering me to join his cross country running team. He gave me the "no-no" feeling. Later I found out I was right to feel as I had!

A dentist fiddled with his apparatus on my chest in an attempt to fondle my eleven year old blooms. It was not my imagination, he moved it around too many times.  My insides were screaming no! Next time I brought my little brother and he asked why. I told him my mom sent him! I can only imagine what he had in store for me that time! I still wonder why mom sent me back in the first place!
I was twelve when an eighteen year old brother of a  friend offered to introduce me to things beyond my ken! I queried my dad hoping to understand what the boy meant. Dad originally explained the facts of life, so I felt safe to ask him anything. Even my forthright father was too embarrassed to answer my question. He told me    to come back in a few years he would explain it then!
My Aunts married neighbor, a person she often traveled and socialized with held me too close as we danced at a house party. What stood between us was not fit for a thirteen year old. I was pretty disgusted!  I later found out he was known to  hang poolside ogling all the young girls!

It's not usually stranger danger! It's always weirdo alert...and they can be and mostly are, people we know! Most people are naive to the predators in their midst!
My immediate family believed me, other relatives didn't understand my ire!
I've had a boss who hugged all the women, groped a few and watched our rears as we bent over! The women were afraid to say anything, knowing life would be miserable if they did. When it happened to me I was afraid to tell my bad tempered partner!
It happens everywhere...at work, in schools, at relatives, in churches, at home, during sleepovers, in camps, by people you would never imagine...  The one thing we rarely know about people are their bedroom habits!
It's an expensive mistake to be naive when it comes to our children! Rise and educate children! Forewarned is forearmed! It kept my child safe and I hope Cupcake is vigilant with her children!

As I created this post I couldn't help but wonder
why I was such a victim at such a young age!
Have you ever  had that No-No feeling about a person that people would never suspect?
