My favorite Kitchen Tools

Thought I’d talk about the kitchen. Lately I hobble around it too much. I have always loved cooking, then it started interfering with my other passions, art and writing.I'm very slow at many things but I’m pretty fast in the kitchen. I need certain tools to make that happen though. I have painstakingly watched people take forever to cut a carrot.Almost having to sit on my hands not to grab the carrot out of the persons hand and use my little turning knife. I just found out the name for it! I always thought it was a paring knife.I even brought it on a kids camping trip in a special jewelry box, amazingly no one touched it! Of course I had a warning sign made in black sharpie markers, not to! Yes, once upon a time….I too was anal about stupid things!

This is my brand new turning knife….my third one in twenty years. My last one was broken by accident, no big deal…it’s inexpensive and old, but two days later I had to get another, Bryan picked one up for me, that's why I know the name of it. I can often be found asking in a panicked voice " Where's my knife, where's my knife". . .I can’t live without that handy little tool! It’s my kitchen hubby, ….well it almost takes the place of one! It’s a lot sharper than most of them anyway! I can zip through peppers, onions, cucumber and tomatoes in no time flat, Wha.....la, a Greek salad is done!

My second favorite is my little hand grater…it's amazing for grating garlic…or cheese. I use garlic in almost everything except baking! So this thing is in the dishwasher twenty four seven….I saw a friend grating her garlic one day…it’s less messy than a press, way faster too! She bought me one, finally after eight years it has a loose part. So this is my new one.

Then Pepper brought home that spatula…heat resistant…I love how thick the handle is… how it’s angled…it even has a snowflake decoration making it’s that much more alluring! It’s up there as one of my new favorite tools.

With my replacement tools, I made spaghetti with Caesar salad, and a Shepard’s pie for the next day. Don’t be thinking I have my cooking groove back…I just wanted to free up time for something else. What are your favorite kitchen tools?

It is hard to emphasize the usefulness of GOOD kitchen tools for cooking. Without them, cooking is a chore and a cook quickly loses interest in the kitchen. In fact, I devoted a full chapter to this subject in my recent book: Kitchen Tools to Keep, Kitchen Tools to Trash in my new book.

Check out my latest (Nov/08):

SHEPHERD's pie? Oh joy!
All our knives are dull and sad. Should do something about that I suppose....

I'll have to ask my husband since he's the chef in our house. He cooks way better than I ever did.

There is one thing he purchased of late that I really like. A handmade steak knife that is awesome. It's so awesome he's going to replace all our poor excuses for steak knives.

Have a terrific day. Big hug. :)

Hmm,never gave this much thought. I guess my favourite kitchen tool would be my stone mortar and pestle (I'm a big fan of herbs and spices).
