Digging Deep Paint Party Friday

Original Acrylic from a random photo this is NOT my daughter still a work in progress

Most of my daughters childhood she rarely touched a utensil except to clear it, wash it or load the dishwasher. During home economics she  made a few recipes only because she had to.  She got an "A" as usual!  She jested about her disdain for cooking and how she had no desire to learn. In fact her hubby, then boyfriend did all the baking. My sister in law joked with her constantly about how the two of them couldn't cook, and never would.
digital  Halloween alteration
One day out of the blue my girl started to cook, it was  amazing. She'd ask a few questions along the way. Mostly she fumbled her way through the rest on her own.  I stayed positive knowing with trial and error she would adjust things as she learned.  I was so grateful she took reigns relieving me from the daily monotony!!  The sauces she now comes up with  are so delectable. Everything she puts together  tastes phenomenal!
I wanted to paint this face a rainbow of colors but it never happened still working on it.
Cupcake  has carried a camera in her purse taking photos at every opportunity since she was thirteen years old, thousands and thousands of photos. Spending every dime she made on developing all her photos before digitals became available!! Now she informs me she loves taking food photos!! Wow, right out of left field that one came! With instagram she is able to share her food.
I used a photo to inspire this painting!
Years ago my ex wanted to buy me paints and canvases but I bucked him. I had no desire to paint. Yet I bought books on how to draw, I have one so old it's yellowed. I also bought loads of calligraphy pens  and sharpies just to doodle with. Still outside of sewing, crocheting, and making cool cakes and painting bright colors on furniture and walls I had no desire to do any kind of painting or artwork!!

I tried changing colors hoping I could find a program to change the flesh into rainbows.
The moral of this story is, explore that which you are most opposed to trying. That thing you have an aversion to. Pay attention to those feelings that make you feel so good but you don't know why! I have always loved colored glass...It makes me so happy and I don't know why! One day I walked into a stained glass store where they were doing stained glass and I almost felt a natural high. It's an expensive craft and at the time I couldn't afford it! Wish I had realized years ago  that  I had such a passion for stained glass, when money flowed freer and my hip didn't hurt so bad. I have other passions now, and no desire to try doing stained glass now. We have a vessel of gifts and talents not always recognized, so it's important to dig deep to find those talents that might bring extreme joy to our life!
First layer on a canvas, still a work  in progress.

I brightened up the colors digitally!
Is there something in your life you're oddly attracted to that you don't understand?
Is there something you've had an aversion to but  fell in love with?

Digitally changed colors that I like best!

This is my contribution to Paint Party Friday!

Isn't it interesting that talents spring to life when we arrive at certain times in our lives? I resisted college because my mother wanted it for me so badly. I couldn't handle it at 18. Years later another woman my mothers peer talked to me and her words sent me back to school. That time I succeeded!
For years I hadn't cooked, over twenty at least, 25, I think is more like it. Suddenly my body tells me eating vegan is for me. I didn't even know what vegan was. Now I love cooking for myself, finding recipes for this plant based way of eating!
Who knew I could draw? Three years ago I got a bee in my bonnet took a one day workshop and haven't stopped since, practically daily!
Listen to your inner voice. It knows you better than you know yourself!
You will find your rainbow colors when you are ready!

Well, I'm happy you dug deep and started painting! Love your colourful bright work! I must admit I've always had an aversion to cooking and I still don't like it. On the other hand I've always wanted to paint and I still do ....

Totally true. I fought and fought with the subversion to 'drawing' - come to find out that it is actually very helpful to painting and collage. You are so right with this. Love the work ! Happy PPF.

Wonderful WIP and deep post! I do not think I have any hidden talents... but of course my interests change, so who knows what I will discover next! :)

you always manage to get us thinking with your posts! How funny that Cupcake hated cooking and it turns out she was a natural at it. I honestly can't think of anything I really don't like that I tried anyway and then loved. The things I do now are all things that I've always been interested in and now I'm lucky enough to have the time and opportunity to do them such as painting and volunteering with animals. I've never been into children - perhaps I should've been a teacher?!

Very interesting post. There are many things I want to do that I haven't done and time is running short. Let's see, cooking school just for fun, learning how to do fingernails, learning a new language, it can go on and on. :) I did buy a Italian DVD learning course and listen to it...sometimes. tee hee. Love your work as always and it's true what Nic says, "you always manage to get us thinking." Have a wonderful day. Thanks.

Cute and great story. Yep, quilting, never wanted to do it, but got in with the quilters, tried it and still don't want to do it, lol. My late hubby was going to buy me a Kiln. . .only I waited too long - guess I really didn't want to do it. I love the crochet and the painting (been drawing since 12 -- 100 years) and glad I'm back at it. My very fave is pastels, but I am trying everything, love the new things and learning from PPF. Blessings, Janet PPF

I like your works in the post, but what has really grabbed my attention this week is your header. I love it!!!

Love your wip canvas- and my fave is the first one with those glorious colors! Your cat girl takes on a different feel with each manipulation.I do love the one with the cobwebs. Can't think of anything I've had an aversion to but tried anyway. Art, writing, nature travel and music have been a part of my life from the time I was just starting school. Of course, there were times when I've had to put one, some, or all of those things on the back burner for whatever reasons but I refuse to allow that to happen anymore. thanks for the great post!

You always leave me thinking. I love that! The paintings are fab and I really love the header. Now, I have to go and ponder my thoughts :)

I'm happy to be back reading your wonderful post. The portrait looks lovely. I saw your new header only now and Love it. What you have said is so true. I was always scared to draw faces So I took the 29 faces challenge and Wow! I am so happy that I did it. As a child I hated yellow/orange shades When I started doing art again I painted with these shades and I still don't get it, why I hated these lovely colors when I was young. Thank you Sherrie, you always help me to put on my thinking cap, especially about the past-:)
Have a wonderful weekend

Oh - I so connected with your post. I never thought I could draw or paint. So I guess I had an aversion to both (or at least an aversion to failure). In the past 3 years I have begun to embrace both drawing and painting and I am so glad I did. Can't wait to see where you go with your work in progress.

Pretty colours today. Maybe sometimes we lack the confidence to try some things and it is a good thing to be pushed into trying it.

I love the way you digitally alter the colours in your work giving them different dimensions and changing their ambiance. Your posts are always thought provoking and I always enjoy visiting your blog:)

Sherrie your art is so colorful! I love your halloween piece! You got me thinking on this, so far I have no hidden attractions or aversions that have turned the opposite way, but who knows what still lies ahead...I think we all have to try as much as possible to be receptive to our inner whispers, take time out and listen!

I love your beautiful pieces this week and your post is so interesting. I told myself for years i couldn't draw or paint, and now I am doing both and loving it! Who knew! thanks for sharing your stories here, they always get me thinking too. xo

Very good post, made me think. I guess art was also an anathema for me. After serious spinal surgery my son brought me some acrylics and an easel- as I could only stand for about 20 minutes a day. I laughed and scoffed saying 'I can't draw a straight line'. Wow look at me now!! That's what I love about life- it is never dull. Happy PPF to you and your cute daughter.

I love that you love to create. It shows in everything you do! It's amazing how easily the noise of life can drown out that quiet little voice in our heart. So glad you listened to yours! Your bright and beautiful artwork brings a lot of joy to others as well! That last canvas really is off to a great start. Have fun with it! xo, janice

but it was a mistake...

i never took an art class growing up yet when i look back over the decades, i always wanted to be an artist. it wasn't until i was an empty-nester that i tried my hand at art. first starting with creating my own handmade journals, collage then wanting to create my own images. i started showing my work last year and to my delight my paintings are in many homes. i am a living testament to you are never too old to find your passion. your post brought all this to mind. xo

Such an interesting post to read about and think about all day, as always. Your painting is intriguing, and I love the version with the web over it, though they are all lovely.
I'm completely with you on glass. We love glass art, and have a few pieces scattered around - but fused glass, not stained. The stained glass windows in old churches and cathedrals is so beautiful, and I am sure you would love many of the examples in this country.

We used to love trying any new skill or craft, but these days are a bit more housebound. A few years ago we went on a couple of fused-glass courses, and turned out gorgeous pieces, enough to give family and friends pieces as unusual gifts. I'll email you a photo. XX

I couldn't agree with you more. I have some techie tendencies, but don't feel strong at it. Anyway, this year I took on the leadership of our school's Robotics team, because no one else would do it. We had our first scrimmage on Saturday, and my student's team came in the middle. I was so proud of my kids, and surprised that I was able to help them get there, since 12/16 of the kids had never built or programmed a robot. Blessings, my friend!

I agree with you (as usual!!) you are usually apprehensive about trying something, because deep down there is a fear, but I have found if I take a great big girl breath + do it I have such fun! It's great that your cupcake takes these risks - you have obviously raised her to follow her heart + that is awesome xx
