" Wear it Proud" Paint Party Friday

Ever since I can remember I have loved hats. Every summer I picked out the brightest most unique fluorescent colored  hat for my little girl to wear on the beach so I could spot her instantly out of a crowd!
Cupcake loves hats as much as I do. She'd even spent her own money on them when she was young!! Now I vicariously live through her since I rarely wear them anymore! Only because my attire doesn't really suit them!! One day I may just spot the perfect hat that calls my name, I'll wear it proudly!

This collage was made several years ago capturing Cupcakes teen years!..
If it wasn't hats, it was hair pretties, or colored hair....but there was  always something decorating my daughters head!! Here's a where's Waldo type collage where you can see me peeking out behind Cupcake wearing a hat as well!
Beardo is not much of a hat guy however Cupcake and Beardo
bought matching toques which is a Canadian term for hats this winter
and have been wearing them frequently and I love it!
Makes me so happy when people wear hats!

Recently I read a few  blogs where artists were afraid of drawing
attention to themselves by wearing a hat!  That made me so sad!
I can understand disliking hats, everyone has their own taste, but
not wearing them strictly because you feel self-conscious
is such a shame.

Years ago  my mother, in my presence told my two year old I was a kook wearing my hat! My relationship with mom was never the same after that! Years of criticism compiled into that one moment where she would now sculpt how my daughter saw me! I refused to let that happen. She'd not label me to my child, she'd not diminish my love of hats, she'd not squash my spirit!! I didn't let her!   I learned not to have  judgement in my eyes, in my voice or in my heart when it comes to my child .....for they will read it and it WILL hurt!! Instead...... wear your hat proud and let them wear theirs too despite what others may think....because people like me will love it...you will bring us joy, you will seem interesting, fun, and I will always wonder if you're an artist too!!

Do you wear your hat proud? Do you just plain despise them for other reasons, or are you simply afraid to wear them!!

This is my contribution to Paint Party Friday and Mix it Monthly
where there are many other wonderful artists participating!!

When I was a teenager i wore hats alot. I loved old hats that i found in the thrift store and berets the most, now that I am older I only wear hats to keep off the sun but I love to see unusual hats on the street :)

What fab art !what nice photos!

I have to wear a hat when walking the dogs ... I look not very fashioned with hats / maybe since my glasses go not well with them...just a few caps are fine for me and look good..
in winter i need them because of wind and coldness in summer I need them because of the sun...
terrible..but I simply say to myself wear it with proud and you are beautiful!
and when not? who matters???
My dogs love me with and without!

You are so right. It can be a hat, your hair style, the colors you choose - wear what you like and what feels good. Be proud of who you are and what you like.

I am not a hat person but I love them on other people. But I love my capes. They are warm but light. They feel so much better to me than a coat. Not everyone agrees with me but that is ok. I love them and wear them all of the time.

I truly enjoyed your art and your pictures of Cupcake. It is always such fun to visit your each week.

I love hats (and your hat art too!) but they look funny on me for some reason. Maybe I have a funny shaped head. My favorite hat to wear is a sock monkey with a big BLOOM pendant on it. I wear it with my green flowered boots and look ridiculous but I don't mind. Works for me. Wonderful photos! Thanks for sharing :)

Your hat art is fun! It is good to figuratively wear your hat/self proudly, and refuse to allow others to make you change to fit their mold. Thanks for sharing. Happy PPF

Love your painting, Sherrie. And the hat is marvelous. I love hats, wore one Sunday for the first time in a jillion years. My son from infancy loved hats, firemen hats, pope's miters, etc. He always seemed to have something on his head. Hurrah for hats! *Besides, when the weather reached 8 degrees this week, a hat felt very good.

Oh hello dear Sherrie, I love your fancy hat ladies! Hats are fun, in summer I love to wear a big straw hat, they protect so well from the heat! Big flouncy hats are great, in the Winter well it's not so cold here so I don't wear one often and am still to find a favorite cosy, I have an old wooly one but it's not a favorite. Hats are fun, finding that special one feels like a treasure, they are so full of character! Lulu has such a pretty pink one with a little red bow, so sweet!

My hats off to you dear friend! I love your colorful drawings of this hat-proud woman! And the collages are such fun! It's obvious you never stood in the way of your daughter's expressing herself!
I too love hats, and really did feel I was making a statement when I wore/ wear my broad brimmed soft canvas hat. Mostly wear it in summer, but especially love wearing it when I draw in public! I feel it IS my artist hat!
My husband has quite the collexpction of hats! Mostly cowboy hats, felt hats, and baseball caps which he wears daily!
And thank you so much for your very thoughtful thoughts about my drawing evolution of late! I see it too and it's quite exciting! Makes me wonder what it will be like when I turn 100!
Happy drawing!!!

I really like your hat painting and musings on wearing hats. I love hats and would wear them more often if they looked better on me. Plus, I am a tall gal with a big head and I have a very hard time finding hats that fit. It's a quest of sorts for me, to find hats that look good and fit.

Love your post and your hat! I frequently wear wide brimmed hats while out painting en plein air. I have several - a couple are always in my trunk for impromptu paint-outs! As an artist, I feel even more empowered to wear hats - after all, they ARE shielding my eyes from the sun :)

I love hats. I have my dads straw hat, my Grandfathers hat, caps, berets and other. When I think of my dad and see the hat on the shelf, I don it. If I'm gardening, I wear my grandfather's hat. I wear my beret to be cool and frankly my dear, I don't give a d... what others think when they see me. I just lift my chin (chins) higher up. tee hee. Great post and very interesting.

My mom in law loved wearing hats, we kept her favorite one and my younger one wears it sometimes ♥

Always enjoy reading your posts. I come from a part of the world where hats are not popular so when I came to the US it took me a while for me to get used to them. But now I love to try different kinds of hats at the store.

Oh How I DO love Hats!!!!! I too have a bigger head so it's sometimes hard to fins ones that fit But I do love wearing them. I think I got that from my Grandmother and Great Grandmother. They both wore hats all of the time and my Great Grandmother had some really awesome ones. I love all of your bright colors in yours too. Great collage of Cupcake :)

Such an awesome post! Love your drawing and your philosophy! You set a wonderful example for your children.
After teaching and living in the NWT for 3 years, I don't worry about what I look like in my hat and coat - I want to be warm. I also bought a beautiful black hat that I have yet to wear - I will find the place to wear it eventually. I love all hats tho and wear them winter and summer.

When I lived in the UK I wore hats quite a bit -usually berets as my head was cold. Here in Baltimore it is too hot most of the time so I just wear woolly hats in winter but nothing too stylish. Keep on wearing your hats and don't give a fig what your mom says. Happy PPF

Amazing painting!! How I love the illustration-like-style!! and the words nearby! What a great message to the world! YAY! These days I wear way more hats and cups that years before, and I love it every day a bit more :) I love the photos of your beautiful daughter! She is so darling!! And if my hat don´t fit to other peoples likes? Who cares? The only thing that cares is how it makes me happy by wearing it and the happiness it brings to other open spirits, hehe...♥ Conny

Your mother and my mother must have been sisters. I use to wear hats ALL the time up north (necessary (too cold, too much sun) but in the south I find that it is way too windy to wear hats and I have had to curtail that particular love of mine. Loved the post. Blessings, Janet PPF
