Overt Visual Messages

Long term couples
Oh boy I was not happy with the painted faces I created this week!
So I'm using some digital ones I made instead! Sadly I may not
finish the  29 Face of September 2016 challenge! I'll post
the painted ones at the end! Does that ever happen to you?
I think I'm just more in a digital head space these days!
By the way these people name themselves...I'd never pick any
of these names to name anything.  This post started one
way and took on a life of it's own in a different direction!
Jay-Jay
Good messages start at home! Not verbal ones either!
Ones children witness! The messages that get to the
heart visually! Watching your dad grab your mom to
swing her around for a little dance in the kitchen.
A parents embrace as they  kiss  each other lovingly!
Your dad, with vacuum in hand, while your moms at work.
Jack
It's patience as your father kindly waits quietly with the kids
in the car, while mom scurries around last minute. Understanding
and respecting that she is assuring nothing is forgotten for
their outing! Or a  dad driving back without complaint because mom
forgot something necessary or needed to check a safety issue!
Dad whistling as he puts up the outdoor Christmas lights!!
Lenny
It's generosity  when people come in droves to gather boxes of
apples freely shared with friends and family. Or watching your mom
exhausted as she fits in one more free hairdo for a family member.
Dad bringing home large sized chocolate bars from a factory to
hand out at Halloween when he was on such a tight budget himself!
Mary
It's kindness and charity when your mom cooks extra, having
you run over weekly plates of food to an elderly lady! Or when
she includes the same neighbor for a family meal during the
holidays! It's when your mom asks every single customer if
they have any used furniture to donate to a family who have
moved across the country with their four kids and  not
even a bed to sleep on. How your loving mom finds clean
beds for the familyThen keeps her composure when she hears
the  ungrateful father say he doesn't need  that woman's charity!
Seeing her satisfied knowing all the kids were now sleeping in beds!
It's watching your dad rush to your uncles aide in blistery weather
during a power outage that had blown off his roof in a
 hurricane like storm!
Joan
Messages of conservation are met, when your mom pours
a small bath, then puts your brother in after you!  Grabs  you
a sweater if you're cold instead of turning up the heat. Feeds
the crows scraps. Composts whatever possible. Drags a
full basket of wet clothes up the stairs to hang them on
the clothes line even when she is bone tired and is having
a bad hip day! It's when she  hands you  a bag  to pick up
the apples off the ground surrounding your tree  so they
don't rot.
These glasses my mom used for more years than I can count...we treasure them!
It's a  frugal  Mother buying good quality shoes at an annual
shoe sale, having them last way longer than you want them to!
Being excited about finding beautiful gold plated drinking
glasses  that would otherwise cost a fortune at Scotties discount!
Using and enjoying them religiously  when having a special drink!
Having weekly grocery sales decide what will be for dinner
that week! Shopping the outer rim of the grocery store for
fresh goods only! Planting and caring for a garden to eat
vegetables from all summer long. Canning pickles, apple
sauce, peaches,  freezing apples and pies to use
all winter!  Only buying processed foods during holidays or
special occasions as a treat!  Sadly  it's  also forcing
you to wear your cousins hand me downs that you hated!

Mike
It's showing you  how to enjoy life with little money!
Playing cards with family  or friends during weekend visits!
Teaching and playing cards and board games with us kids from
a very early age! Gathering with family for celebrations,
sharing stories, laughing, dancing to the music in the basement
during celebrations! Kicking a ball with kids, or teaching them how
to ride a bike and hold a baseball bat!  It's taking a picnic dinner
to the beach after work on summer evenings,so the kids could have
a swim! Talking intimately at the table about anything and everything!
Roy face  #17
It's examples of empathy toward others. Knowing your dad eats
lunch at a table with a gay man, because none of the other
coworkers will! Knowing he is listening with compassion about
the mans personal woes. Later educating us about some of the
sadness the man faces daily! Teaching us to have understanding,
be nonjudgmental and accepting!
Edith face #16
Good messages come from a mom who sends you to clean the
home of a lady with Cancer. A mom who teaches you restraint
by not buying things frivolously. A mom who saves money on a
meager income, delays gratification by doing without an
waiting for sales   It's teaching kids to contribute to the family
home by doing chores without pay or complaint!  It's watching
all the adult women contribute to a meal, then do the  dishes
as a team so one poor women isn't stuck with the full load!
It's hugging and loving each other just because!
Martha Face 18
A father who cuddles your new puppy while quietly reminding
everyone, (even though you're an adult,) that it's just a new
baby and must be treated like one. Parents who welcome
the camper friendly once lame bird  that lands on their shoulder,
letting it feed off left overs instead of shooing it away!
A father who never once used one swear word in your
presence even though there were many times that
gave him cause!

Harvest moon face!!#21
Even though I have listed all the overt good messages
children learn and take to adulthood. There are equally
bad ones they can learn too. Such as violence, abuse,
verbal and otherwise, intolerance, judgement, addiction,
bullying, narcissism, entitlement and overspending!
Simone Face #20
I'm always surprised at what kids absorb
from their parents overt visual messages!
Often more than what they say!
Dezzy Face #19
It's all what we do with those messages.
I know I have turned some of the bad messages
around doing the opposite. However many of
the really good ones I have kept and proudly
witness them going forward  in a third generation!

What did you learn, that you lived?
Good or bad, what visual message
did you get as a child?

My first thought as I read your post was that your art always makes me smile, regardless of the text content. Your faces and the bright colours are always a joy to see. I think you're doing great at Face 21 already in the challenge! Harvest Moon face is my fave :)

You are absolutely right in saying that it's not what you say, but what you do, that children learn. Blessings, my friend!

Loved the post today and all the paintings, varied and colorful. The regret I have is one many have, I'm sure, and that is that I did not express my appreciation nearly enough to my frugal and long-suffering mother. Now that she is gone, I can see self-centerness on my part. I feel sure that my children will see my good points after I leave this earth better than they can see them now.

Ah such super faces, what a show! Reading your post was great, I love what you say here, all the wonderful things you can learn from your parents and pass on to your own kids. The main message I always got from my folks was to do what made me happy and so I go with the flow, pushing my own to follow on this path. It always has to feel right. My first thought as I read this post was I wonder what's the topic of the day here, knowing how you always write with heart and emotion.

really WONDERFUL post and assortment of faces and characters! I think all of us have had at least one bad experience but I feel it is important-and best for one's health and well being- to remember to focus on the good. Happy PPF!

I like all your faces! It's okay to throw paintings you don't like in the bin - there are some pieces that just don't work. It's also okay to change directions toward what IS working. Great post!

trying again because I think my comment was lost...
loving all your vibrant faces and wow- what a very thoughtful post Sherrie! You truly have learned how to turn things around for yourself and you are so poetic about it too. We all go through some bad things but it is so important for our own health and well being to focus on the good and/or the lessons that make us stronger. Happy PPF!

You are fortunate to have parents who taught you important life lessons by her own examples. I am sure that you have done the same with family and friends. I thoroughly enjoyed visiting you today!

I have really been pushing on the 29 Faces challenge of Ayala's Art. I am caught up as of today and have one ready for tomorrow. You are way ahead of the game with all great faces. I had to laugh about your bath because I was the baby and got the last bath in the dirty water. I know why people could throw the baby out with the bath water. LOL

You described my mom perfectly. Not so much my dad. I know it is the mother you are as well. Yes, of course I draw something and think, "oh heck no, I am not showing that face." LOL I love all of your art. It is free, moving, and sensitive. My favorite this week is Lenny. She really touches me. Have a wonderful weekend. Hugs N

You're so good with all that digital stuff, Giggles! I really can't get on with it, apart from scanning backgrounds to use as collage papers. I think I just like to get my fingers dirty :)

It is wonderful to have loving and empathetic parents. My mother was not like that. She was narcissistic and depressed. I suppose I took my inspiration from my grandparents who gave me unconditional love.

I think we may have grown up in the same home. My mother was a hugger, a kind, thoughtful, hard working, fun loving, nature loving, animal loving, sharing kind of person. My father, the head of household in those days, was strict but fair, kind and loving and honest to a fault. (like he wouldn't let me take a pencil from his office because it didn't belong to me) He would choose to have lunch with the janitor staff and learn from them and share with them as opposed to the "teacher's lunchroom" Though he was a full professor, he treated and thought of everyone as his equal and loved to start a conversation with "so, what is your philosophy of life?" He taught us to think, not take things for granted and to learn and keep learning no matter how old we are. Most of these things I learned about them by observing them ... hopefully I have grown up to emulate their wonderful values and kind hearts. This was a lovely post ... and yes, we are all aware of how hate can be taught just by following our national politics ... so sad. Thanks Giggles for reminding me how lucky I have been.

I love our painted faces. Roy and martha especially. My grandmother was a kindly lady who always loaded my pram up with veg from her garden to take to elderly ladies who lived alone in flats with no gardens. They were so pleased to get all the bounty...I got the thanks...but it was grandma who thought of it and made me the messenger.

What wonderful messages. This was such a moving post. I think your digital faces count towards 29 faces. Digital art is an important media and I think the challenge is part of challenging ourselves and if you feel in the mood for digital, I don't see why it shouldn't count...

I can especially empathise with your comment about not finishing a challenge. We often start with enthusiasm and then realise it is not really for us and that there are more fun and interesting things to do. Time is too precious to spend doing something we are not enjoying or which is not being productive.
I very much like the digital faces you have painted, these characters have their stories in their faces. (The stories may not be theirs but we can imagine they are).
I know someone who looks like Joan, she suffers pain but is a very nice lady. I'm glad you have given her a warm coat to keep her warm. Lenny is lovely with her pretty blond hair and lovely eyes and I like her pink eye-shadow. Mike doesn't look very confident but maybe he is just tired. I love them all. Mary's lips!!! I also like the flowery background you have made for them and it is especially effective when we see just their faces.
Great blogpost!

What a lovely, thoughtful post!! It brings back so many of the messages from my childhood! I was very fortunate to have a loving, supportive family who still believe I can do anything! I treasure those times, they have made me who I am today. I can only hope to have lived up to their standards with my own family :)

wonderful artwork Giggles! Love all the various expressions and your use of vibrant colors! Happy PPF :)

There's only a handful of challenges that I actually finished, but better half way through than nothing at all, for as long as it inspires you. Both your painted and digital faces are fabulous, such characters!

Wonderful faces and sentiments. As a kid I remember my parents dancing to Spanish music in the kitchen (salsa and merengue dancing). You brought back other family thoughts and memories from simpler times. Have yourself a wonderful day and keep creating these lively characters. They're fun and have so much personality!
