Paint Party Friday with Good and Bad Surprises!

Check out all the creative souls at  Paint Party Friday for some yummy inspiration!!
And Illustration Friday to find more artist  illustrating this week prompt " Lonely"
Also a first for " In the Studio" artists galore there too!!

Xen pronounced Zen original acrylic 8'x8' cradle board
I have so much to share this week!
I only worked on three pieces but some of the color edits
I am in love with so I have to share them!!

For ages now I have wanted to do a tribute painting of  my friends dog who I adored.
She passed last year after a long happy life!
I wasn't sure when would be the right time!!
I hesitate to give this painting to my friend just in case it makes her uncomfortable,
or doesn't suit her style!! I still need to work on the eyes a bit more too!!

Oh my goodness I could see these edits on a large canvas.....
I love how fun the colors are!!!
However a  few things I never buy or give to others
unless I  know their specific brand or tastes,
is  perfume, artwork and  underwear!
Especially if we  plan  to stay friends!!

My ex mother in law did a paint by number velvet roses for my wedding.  Expecting me to hang it over my bed!  It was  well intended, but not my taste in decor.   We put it up for a short time! Thankfully she lived on the opposite coast and didn't visit. It was unframed cloth, trendy during the seventies, so I was able to fold it up and tuck it away in case she visited!
Mother and Daughter done in my sketch book from a blotch of color. Wish this were a canvas

Can you see the  mother and daughter?
It even reminds me of my daughter and I
had we lived back in the depression era!

My ex sister in law also sent a huge  piece of art one Christmas, also unframed.  I panicked when it arrived from back east! I'll let you guess the rest!!   What does one do? They  could never afford to visit, so you can guess where that one went too!!

I'm guilty of making a large crochet pillow for a friend in the seventies as a Christmas present. She gave me  a beautiful perfume. I still regret giving her that big old blue eyesore even though it was made with so much love!. I am very picky about my fragrance still she managed to find exactly what I would like. Good friends are like that they just know....but creativity should be shared with caution, so as not to put friends in a precarious position!
Zak was also done from a bunch of splotches, his nose stuck out first!

If my  friend shows an interest in Xen the painting, it will be hers.  She'll have to tell me though because I don't want my friend burdened with having to find a place for it when it makes her feel uncomfortable or doesn't fit with her decor! Art is a very personal thing, I'm the first to admit my bright colors are not for everyone!! I respect that!!

Do you have a story about a gift that turned into a nightmare?
ART DONE BY TRACEY FLETCHER KING

On a nicer note flash ahead forty years and  I received this awesome snail mail all the way from Australia this week!! From one of my favorite artist/blogger friends  Tracey Fletcher King, who is not only an amazing artist, but she writes a entertaining humorous blog and is of great inspiration to many!!  Tracey sent a  blank card that I'm probably going to frame because I love it so much, plus it goes with my decor. An  adorable post card that really represents who my daughter and I are as  homemakers was also in the envelope, and may find it's way into a frame too!  Thanks a Million Tracey I sincerely LOVE IT!!

PS....I always try to plant some Kale in pots on my front porch during  winter, they look just like Tracey's watercolor!

Xen and Zak are both great, and I like seeing them in different colors. Also like the mother/daughter painting. As for art as a gift, I agree with you. It's very personal.

I have this image of you now - rushing to put up pictures as you welcome visitors!!

You know that picture in your sketchbook that you wish was on canvas? Well it can be! I've had several small pieces on scrappy bits of paper printed onto canvas!

Giggles dear, how I wish you had posted this before our vacation. As a house gift for my sister in law and brother in law I gave them my painting, matted and nicely framed, of the tulip poplar flower (http://hastingshall2.wordpress.com/2012/05/23/ppf-week-11-year-2-2/). It was not well received because their taste runs to lithographs of early western American art. I didn't even get a thank you.

Your works here are adorable. I like the Xen paintings, but I do favor the one where the dog is dog colored although I see great potential for the brightly colored versions.

I think Xen is a beautiful gift for your friend. Even if its not her colors or style, she will definately see the love behind the creation. I totally agree about art as a gift. I've gone out on that limb three times and thankfully they all worked out. But they were people I knew it was right for - just like your friend could pick the right perfume scent for you. I do love your mother and daughter too! Happy PPF

I love all this, and your stories are terrific! Hopefully these people don't read your blog ;)

You should definitely give the painting of the dog to your friend. A painting of a beloved pet is something very special...

These are all wonderful! The mother and daughter one just grabbed me. I love how this turned out and I really love seeing where it started! The purple and green edit is my favorite color combo on it! Happy PPF!

Thanks for the shout out and glad you enjoyed them... and I love the dog pic and think your friend will treasure it... it is of her baby after all and I am sure it is missed deeply... as to presents into nightmares... don't even get me started ... I swear my in laws are all on a mission to find the worst presents ever... a retractable clothes line was a beaut and there is an endless supply of red lipsticks and metallic handbags in the world it would appear... I don't wear makeup usually and a silver handbag isn't quite my thing, but I siphon them off to school rummage sales... lord they are ugly things... xx

Oh wow, I love the picture, all of the pictures of Xen, and just as all have noted, I would truly treasure it, not only as a beloved tribute, but any of your art is wonderful, not just saying that! You have come such a long way and it is so much fun to see you working in so many genres!! Whenever you are ready, I would love to humbly accept the wonderful picture of Xen, if you really want to part with it :))

I personally think your art is awesome. And dont worry about that crochet pillow. A lot of YOU went into making it and I am sure your friend appreciated that. Isnt it great that Xen's mom already loves your doggie pic? xo

i love seeing the digital edits of your pieces in all their bright colors! i'm sure your friend would just love your tribute to her dog-- what a lovely, personal gift.

i laughed out loud when i read about your mother-in-laws paint by number and the expectation that you hang it above your bed!

Unknown said...

great post! It's so true about expectations with something as personal as art. I too laughed out loud. Love the dog -- how could your friend NOT like that!

I love Zen. Do what I do show your friend the picture and if she enthuses over it, offer it to her. then if she takes it you will know she really loves it. Thanks for visiting and leaving a comment.

I like Xen, I think he's a cutie. And I love the purples...

It's difficult to give art as a gift, usually I don't anymore. I only had one bad experience with it, my friend seemed not to like it very much. I felt sad, but couldn't figure out how to take it back politely and get her something else... So since then I tend not to unless I'm absolutely sure...

Hi Giggles, my favorite is the mother and daughter! You start from splotches just like I do! Discovered this from Mystele, do you know her? I was so in love with how she "pulled" images from her splotches the same way we find figures from clouds! I am sure your friend would love to receive her dog's painting! It would be a comfort knowing someone missed him too! What a lot to see in your blog! Patsy from

The picture of the pups for your friends couldn't be a better gift. The mother and daughter is adorable. . . The pillow/perfume. . . friends always know. That's the beauty of a great friendship (I call them my sister/friends). I enjoy your art and your stories. Blessings, Janet, PPF

We got some very strange art for our wedding - fortunately none of it from close relatives, so we mostly chucked it. I do have three framed prints of classic Monet pieces that were a gift from my granfather's third wife - they're beautiful, but I can't seem to find the right space for them! So frustrating.

My mother-in-law mostly wants to give us stuff she found that her children used that my daughter might like. If she had any taste I'd appreciate this, but she seems to have picked up whatever was cheapest at yard sales and the like. (Not that I have any problem with bargains, but buying somethign that was ugly in the first place and then giving it to me when it is also old and matted is not very appreciated.) She also buys my daughter clothes - and most of the time they're okay, if not exactly my style, but the fluorescent leopard-print leggings were a bit much.

However, she loves us dearly, babysits at the drop of a hat, and has cheerfully embraced and supported every single parenting decision I've made, so as far as I'm concerned she gets a gold star anyway.

So much wonderful art! I am so happy you linked up to our 'in the studio' party! It is nice to meet you and your work. Love the puppy piece and the meaning behind it. Actually brought tears to my eyes. We lost our weimaraner last month and it is still so raw. This will make a beautiful and thoughtful gift to your friend. You are so sweet!!

I think they ARE lovely!!! I understand about art as gifts too LOL - at one (broke) pt in my life all I had to give for gifts was my art... then it hit me - ppl might not even like this LOL it happens oh well

Carola Bartz said...

Your dogs are lovely and I like all the color changes - that is fun!! I agree with you in giving art as a gift. Luckily so far I haven't made any bad experiences. So far I gave something of my art only to people I knew they truly liked it.

Jez said...

All of these are fantastic, and the dogs have such soulful eyes. And as always I love all your colour changes. As the mother of daughters, your mother and daughter painting speaks to me. When I married 55years ago my aunt gave us a revolting bed coverlet in a horrible shade of old gold, and my mother matched it with an eiderdown of the same colour. Try not using the present from Mum when you live close by! And it lasted for yeeeeears.

I love the mother and daughter painting, such vibrancy and energy in the piece. Your dog paintings are cute as well. I laughed imagining the paint by number velvet rose painting above your bed...how thoughtful. :)

Oh my, I love the mother and daughter! I can even see 3 figures in there. Your dog looks lovely, but I agree: not everyone appreciates the same things. I think it's a great solution to just wait and see whether your friend shows an interest, and only then give it to her.

I read this on Saturday, but am just now getting back to comment. I LOVE your portrait of Xen- it all the assorted color play you've shared, but you're right that it's really scary to give art as a gift! I've had times when it was the perfect thing, and other times, not so much. I think you're exactly right to let her actions guide you as to whether or not you give it to her.

I LOVED reading every word of this LONG post!!! ;-) I am still laughing hysterically over the gift from the x mother in law. So so funny. I ONLY give art that the person has admired effusively or asked for. I am honored even more after reading this from your experience to tell you that my son and his dear wife have an art quilt I made them for their wedding gift hanging in their bedroom. And I do not believe they only put it up when I visit. LOL I don't think so anyway. They have other bits of my art all around the house. And now that I think of it some are not things they asked for. I just did them, but luckily for me they like them. LOL I think so anyway. I could be fooling myself.
I love your doggie pictures. Will she get all of them or just one?
And lucky you for having Tracy King art in your home!!! I'd frame them too!
